The Salug River runs through the central part of Mindanao, where the "town of the Salug River" is found in the mountains. Living in a traditional community of the Matig Salug tribe, Dr. Abati's team participates in a way of life characterized by slash-and-burn agriculture. The leader of the community regulates all of the tribe's economic, religious and cultural activities. The team observes how he organizes the tribe's work, protects the town by communing with spirits and cures the tribespeople of diseases using a mixture of basic herbs. The Matig Salug are a polygamous group with a well-structured society. They surprise the team with their artistic sensibilities, expressed in songs and dance.
