The Palawans are an autonomous, indigenous group that lives in the southern jungle of Palawan Island. The Palawans' culture and language have Austronesian origins and are related to those in northern Borneo and Mindanao. Their economy is mixed, and their social system is based on friendship and family ties. Some Palawans have not yet been converted to Christianity, and Dr. Abati's team learns the Palawans' creation myths and witnesses a remarkable ritual of gratitude to their diwata, or nature spirits.
